Why your shop is invisible on Google Maps

A shop with customers, staff and ten years of trading can still be missing from Google Maps. That is not bad luck. It is almost always one of five specific, fixable things.

Here is what we check first, in order, when a business in Trichy or anywhere else in Tamil Nadu tells us they cannot be found.

1. The profile exists but was never verified

An unverified Google Business Profile can sit in the system for years without ever appearing in the map pack. Verification is the switch that makes it eligible to rank at all. If you never received the postcard, the call or the video verification, you are not in the running.

Check this before anything else. Everything below is wasted effort on an unverified profile.

2. The category is wrong or too vague

Your primary category is the single strongest signal for which searches you show up in. A sweet shop listed under the generic Store category will lose to one listed under Sweet Shop every time.

Pick the most specific primary category that genuinely describes what you sell, then add secondary categories for the rest. Do not stuff it. Google weights the primary far more heavily, and irrelevant secondaries can pull you into searches you cannot satisfy.

3. Your name, address and phone number disagree across the web

If your address is written four different ways across your website, Justdial, IndiaMART and Facebook, Google has to guess which one is real. Guessing lowers confidence, and low confidence means lower placement.

Pick one exact format for your name, address and phone number. Use it everywhere, character for character, including whether you write Road or Rd. This is dull work and it moves rankings more than most things that sound more exciting.

4. There is no proximity signal on your own website

Google cross-references your profile against your site. If your website never states your city, never embeds a map, and has no address in the footer, you have removed the corroboration it is looking for.

Put the full address in the footer of every page, mark it up with LocalBusiness schema, and give the business a real contact page rather than only a form. This is part of the technical work we cover in our SEO and local search services.

5. Reviews stopped

Review volume and recency both count. A profile with forty reviews, none from the last eighteen months, reads as a business that may have closed. Two reviews a month, answered, beats a burst of thirty followed by silence.

Ask at the moment of satisfaction, not by mass SMS later. And reply to every one, including the bad ones, in public and without arguing.

What order to do this in

Verification, then category, then consistency, then your own site, then reviews. Doing reviews first on an unverified profile with the wrong category is the most common way businesses waste six months.

If you want this audited properly against your competitors in your own town, talk to us and we will tell you honestly which of the five is costing you the most.
